Writing Instruction in Our Classroom
Writing Workshop
Kindergarten is an exciting time in your child's writing development. Most students begin their writing development by drawing pictures. Quickly they progress to writing labels on their drawings. Then it is not long and they are writing a sentence. Most kindergarten students leave writing four to six sentences about a topic.
We spend 45-50 minutes of our writing block participating in a writing workshop. Writing workshop provides many opportunities for me to work with individuals and small groups. We do writing workshop four days a week. The fifth day I integrate art with writing. We do a theme base art activity and then write about it. In addition, we spend 10-15 minutes of our writing block working on letter formation, writing fluency, and word study study activities.

Writing is Integrated into Theme Activities
Each student had to write a description of their Easter egg. They also had to draw a map of where they were going to hide it. Students hid their eggs and then gave their map and description to a friend. Students had a wonderful time finding their eggs.
